Sin’s short circuit
Every believer is gifted by the Holy Spirit, who gives the power to live the Christian life and to be an effective witness for the Savior. Paul implies this in 1 Corinthians 6:19 by telling believers that their bodies are the temples of Holy Spirit. We too need to be reminded of this because oftentimes God’s strength is not evident in our lives. Paul calls this inactive status of Holy Spirit in our life as ‘grieving’, or ‘quenching’ the Spirit:
“…grieve not the Holy Spirit of God” (Ephesians 4:30)
“Quench not the Spirit” (1 Thess. 5:19)
Little things can hinder the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Unconfessed sin can cut off the effectiveness of our witness and testimony. Sometimes we become powerless because of an unforgiving attitude toward another person. Or possibly an unscriptural alliance with someone in the world destroys our fellowship with the Spirit. Perhaps we have a rebellious will that makes serving God difficult. Then too, loss of power may be caused by a bad habit to which we cling. Any number of little things can cut off the energy supplied by Spirit.
A little sin will add to your trouble, subtract from your energy, and multiply your difficulties.
When we correct these situations and once more live in obedience to God, His Spirit will be free to follow through us. We will enjoy renewed power to serve the Lord.
“Without Me, You Can Do Nothing” (John 15:5)
“I can do anything through Christ which strengthens me.”( Phil 4:13)
Prayer:
Come Holy Spirit, restore your people.
Come Holy Spirit, you who raise the dead to life, deliver your people from the evil one.
Come Holy Spirit, fill this place;
heal these people; unblock their hearing;
unloose their speaking; replace fear with love.
Come Holy Spirit, make these stones to live, that we may be drawn more deeply into your Triune life. Amen.
